Chainsaw kings wow crowds at Toowoomba Royal Show
IF YOU want to a see a true example of Australian hard yakka, you only needed to witness Wayne Donovan and his band of chainsaw experts turn logs into woodchips at the Toowoomba Show.
The Chainsaw Races was one of the top-billed events at the showgrounds yesterday, a year after it was rained out.
While Mr Donovan's work matches his passion, his competitors come from a diverse range of fields.
"I've been doing it all my life - I'm a timber cutter by trade,” he said.
"Some are machinery operators, logging contractors, one fella is a mechanic and another is a truck driver.
"It's the camaraderie - we're all good mates but once that flag drops, that's it.”
Mr Donovan said the sport was something of a return to the roots of Australian hard work, saying many onlookers were impressed by the old school methods.
"We get a lot of people who come here and say, 'that's how grandad used to cut the posts, but you do it a lot faster',” he said with a laugh.
